Sourcelab designed and programmed the "Journeys of the Imagination" online exhibit by tapping into the rich artistry of the maps and sampling various elements to create highly original animated metaphors that open each section.

For example, to represent how a map maker's bias can affect the creation of a map we animated 2 figures both proclaiming that their relative location should be the point of the prime meridian, or 0° longitude.
"Journeys of the Imagination" presents an array of maps that demonstrate the changing perceptions of the world over time. We worked closely with the original exhibit curators to translate the physical exhibit and accompanying book, into an immersive online experience created in Flash. In the physical exhibition a timeline was printed and installed along the perimeter of the exhibition that compared major world events of the past 500 years with the dates the historical maps were created. We adapted this timeline into an interactive component, allowing users to view maps and compare events online. As with our other BPL exhibit Faces and Places, we collaborated closely with the original curators to translate "Journeys" into a virtual tour.
